Last night I went to hear OLA - a singer who I consider to be in a league of his own. I have actually been working with him for many years until last year when we said our goodbye and he chose to concentrate on his own material.
Last night was a treat. I was always amazed at his abilities when he joined us at functions and sang covers, but hearing him perform his own material was a different experience.
He is a complete master of the vocal chords. It is like seeing a masterful pianist or violinist, only that his instrument is his voice and himself. He really has a divine gift that is extremely rare, and even if you don't like 'soul' music per se, it is worth going to see him as he is right at the top of his trade. He manages to perform with such charisma whilst sparing us the usual egotistical appraoch that many performers can't escape from. By the end of the gig he managed to get almost everyone dancing which was pretty cool given the venue and average age of the audience !
Its always difficult to put experiences into words, so I invite you to come down and have a look yourself. I am going to hear him again on 12th October at Ronnnie Scotts. Let me know if you want to join me. In the mean time here is a link to his website - http://www.olasmusic.com/NuSite/gigs.html - that specific page has all the dates on it.
